Save The Brown Trout

What Our Members Say

"The Sponsors of these fishing competitions should not support the slaughter of our native brown trout. Its an absolute disgrace. They should only fund competitions that run catch, photo & release therefore promoting conservation for the next generation"

"The federations need to do more to promote catch and release, they must oppose all competitions which require a weigh in and encourage all affiliated clubs to discourage their members from killing trout"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Many anglers are just killing brown trout to win badges. IFI must come out with a better system to protect these fish."

"I fully agree with a push for greater protection for our native trout. Although it really upsets me to see people killing large wild trout, I believe the biggest issue is poor water quality and abuse of habitat. We have rivers and lakes that have the propensity to support big wild trout and they are abused and treated like sewers. Any time there is a flood on the Boyne the banks are littered with tampons, condoms, nappies and other biohazards..raw sewage going into an SAC river...it's going on for years. I've heard that some recent invertebrate sampling for water quality on the river yielded very poor results. I visit Galway regularly and my family can't drink the water over there because the lake is so polluted it makes us sick."

"Fully agree with you. I'm fighting this for several years here in Galway on the Clare River and it always goes on deaf ears. Regarding trophy hunting its a factor effecting Lough Corrib the competitions over the years have decimated trout numbers"

"The tipping point for me was a Munster Championships in Killarney a few years ago when 1,500 trout were weighed in. Absolutely no excuse for that. Catch and release is the only answer. I know that people might cheat, but you know what? The trout are more important than the competition. Always. Always. Always.."
